The Republican Governors Association removed Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens from his executive board position after Greiten's Thursday arrest on an invasion of privacy charge, The Hill reported.

Paul Bennecke, the group's executive director, made the announcement Friday.

"Gov. Greitens informed us last night that he is going to remain in Missouri this weekend to fight back against what his team has called a baseless charge, and will not be attending the RGA's winter meeting in Washington. Given his desire to focus his full attention on moving forward in Missouri, he also no longer intends to serve on the Executive Committee of the RGA. We look forward to a quick resolution of this issue. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gov. Greitens and his family," Bennecke said in the statement, the Hill reported.

Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson, a Republican, announced that the legislature would hold its own investigation, and other Republican lawmakers in Missouri have called on Greitens to resign.

"We will carefully examine the facts contained in the indictment and answer the question as to whether or not the governor can lead our state while a felony case moves forward," Richardson said.

A grand jury on Thursday indicted Greitens on a charge of invasion of privacy on allegations of taking a compromising photo of a woman with whom he had an affair in 2015.

The governor was arrested and arraigned, then released Thursday on his own recognizance, the Hill reported.

Greitens said he made a mistake, but has committed no crime. "The people of Missouri deserve better than a reckless liberal prosecutor who uses her office to score political points," Greitens said, referring to Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, who launched the investigation into his affair.
