Republican Josh Hawley announced Tuesday he is running for the Senate seat now held by Democrat Claire McCaskill of Missouri.

Hawley, the Missouri attorney general, made his announcement in a video:

"Next year I am going to run for the United States Senate," he said in the video featuring his wife, Erin, and two children. "This isn't something we were planning to do, but we believe we had to do all we can to win a better future for our country"

And he took aim at McCaskill in the video, saying: "She has turned her back on farmers.

She has ignored working families. She's been wrong on every Supreme Court nominee for the last 11 years. She doesn't represent us. It's time to do something new."

The Washington Times said Hawley's bid for the Senate seat had been expected. And it noted McCaskill is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democrats next year.
