Sen. Mike Rounds Wednesday urged cautious optimism when it comes to North Korea, even though President Donald Trump earlier in the day described good news when it came to both North and South Korea and the summit happening between their two leaders.
"This is a case where there has been lots of talking in the past," the South Dakota Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"We're still talking. As we move forward and we see progress, it gives us hope that we can perhaps resolve it peacefully."
It is a positive step that North Korea is suggesting it will take down one of its missile testing facilities, said Rounds, as the news that leader Kim Jong Un has said he'd have outside experts come in to verify that had happened.
"Remember, the fact that we actually had a number of our fallen heroes being returned, that was a substantive result of what the president has been able to accomplish with North Korea," said Rounds.
"We're moving in the right direction. But we want to see things solid. We want to see the real results before we start claiming success. At this point, it's a lot better off than it was before the president started trying to negotiate with North Korea."
It's also a positive step that the two countries want a formal end to the Korean War, and things are moving forward, said Rounds, but "these can be derailed just as quickly as they can start to move forward. This is not going to happen overnight."
