Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's remarks Tuesday condemning Donald Trump's divisive campaign rhetoric and calling on the president-elect to rescind the appointment of top adviser Steve Bannon "is throwing gas on the fire," former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said.

"There are riots in the streets today," Rogers, the former Michigan congressman who abruptly left Trump's transition team on Tuesday, told Jim Sciutto on CNN. "I think there is all of this unfortunate rhetoric feeds into both sides of this problem.

"I would hope that the majority leader would take his time to try to de-escalate the problem," Rogers said. "I think he is throwing gas on the fire."

On the Senate floor Tuesday, Reid said that Democrats "want to work with Mr. Trump when we can," saying that his party has "a responsibility to improve the life of Americans, all lives.

"But we also have other responsibilities," said Reid, 76, the Nevada senator who is retiring at the end of the year. "We have responsibilities to be the voice of millions of Americans sitting at home, afraid that they're not welcome anymore in Donald Trump's America.

"We have a responsibility to prevent Trump's bullying and aggressive behavior from becoming normalized in the eyes of America, especially the millions of young people who are watching and wondering."

Rogers, 53, was advising the Trump transition team on national security issues. He abruptly left the team earlier Tuesday.

In his time working with Trump's team, Rogers said that what he saw was far different from Reid's remarks.

"Half the team that I worked with on the national security team were women, by the way," he told Sciutto. "Minorities were included there.

"Nobody looked at it that way. They looked at individuals who had jobs and responsibilities to get done.

"I am hoping that we can get back to that kind of conversation.

"I don't think we need to rise to the level of chronicling each one making it sound like every neighborhood, every school, every location has these people in them," Rogers said. "I don't believe that's true.

"I think America is in a better place.

"Rhetoric will help us get in a better place," he added. "His rhetoric is not going to do that."
