CIA's Pompeo: We'll Continue 'Crushing Our Adversaries' Despite Shutdown

("CBS This Morning")

Despite thousands of intelligence community employees forced to go on furlough because of the government shutdown, there will be no impact on CIA operations, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said on Monday.

His comments came during an interview on "CBS This Morning."

"We're going to continue crushing our adversaries, whether the government's open or closed," Pompeo said. "We do hope it gets opened back up. But for today and tomorrow and for the few days ahead of us, we're going to continue to do the things we need to do."

Pompeo disputed claims the shutdown signals a dysfunction in government.

"Look, I served in Congress, so I've seen this from another role. I'm not sure I agree that it signals dysfunction," he said. "The American people are having complicated discussions about their priorities. I think that's entirely appropriate in a democracy."

On another issue, Pompeo said North Korea is "a handful of months" away from being able to deliver an attack on the territorial United States.

Norah O'Donnell of CBS News noted he had used the same phrase when asked the question months earlier.

"It's true," he said. "I hope to be able to say it a year from now as well. The United States government is working diligently to extend that timeline."
