Newt Gingrich: 'Helpful' for Trump to Watch Pence in Debate

It would be "really helpful" for President Donald Trump to rewatch how Vice President Mike Pence handled his debate with Sen. Kamala Harris "two or three times" and to observe how his disciplined approach was effective, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.

"I thought Vice President Pence was amazingly well-prepared, very disciplined, and I think that he not only drew the contrast on policy but in the process, he allowed people to really have a much better sense of who Sen. Harris was as a person," Gingrich said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "All the stuff I have seen so far, she didn't fare very well, just as she didn't when she ran for president on her own."

It was also important for Pence to press Harris on whether a Joe Biden administration will push to expand the number of Supreme Court nominees, a question Biden also didn't answer in his first debate with President Donald Trump, noted Gingrich.

Another important exchange happened when Pence pointed out Trump's move to cut off the flow of travel from China at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Biden was opposed, attacked the president for doing it, said it was xenophobic and wrong," said Gingrich. "I think that the administration, frankly, should do a much more aggressive job of drawing the distinction between Nancy Pelosi going to Chinatown, Bill de Blasio going to the movies, all these Democrats who said, 'Don't overreact' ... President Trump helped save several million lives, even in the middle of a tragedy."

Gingrich also said Harris "can't tell the truth" about Biden's planned tax increases.

"They learned from Walter Mondale who said, 'I will raise your taxes,' and the country crushed him. [Ronald] Reagan carried 49 states," said Gingrich. "I mean, if she came out and said, 'Yes, I'm really for the Green New Deal, I really want to end fracking, and I really want to raise everybody's taxes by $4 trillion,' there is no point in their running the rest of the campaign."
