Multiple members of the military were removed from Vice President Mike Pence's protection detail after they brought women to their hotel in Panama ahead of Pence's visit there.
NBC News reports that service members from the Army and Air Force took the women into a secure area of the hotel. Pence and his wife Karen were still in the United States at the time.
The service members were assigned to the White House communications team and were visiting the site before the Pences arrived.
After staff members saw the incident occur on security video, the military members — who NBC reports were senior officers — returned back to Washington.
"We are aware of the incident and it is currently under investigation," Air Force spokesman Col. Patrick S. Ryder told NBC. "We can confirm that the individuals in question have been reassigned back to the Army and Air Force."
ABC News reports the incident involved three members of the Army and one individual from the Air Force. The officers did not register the women before bringing them into a publicly closed area of the hotel.
Pence visited Panama Aug. 17 and toured the Panama Canal as part of a trip to Central and South America.
The Secret Service came under fire in 2012 after 11 agents and uniformed officers were involved in a prostitution scandal days before President Barack Obama visited Colombia, which resulted in disciplinary actions and the implementation of new policies.
