Vice President Pence has decided to cut short his visit to South America early and fly home on Thursday, after President Donald Trump sparked widespread controversy for his comments on Tuesday that both sides were to blame for the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, The Hill reported on Wednesday.

Pence's statement in Chile came just as Trump was announcing that he would disband two economic councils amid the resignation of many CEOs from the advisory boards objecting to Trump's remarks.

When Pence was asked whether he agreed with Trump's statements that there was blame on both sides for the violence in Charlottesville, the vice president did not directly answer the question, but said "I stand with the president."

Pence had originally been scheduled to return home Friday afternoon, ABC News reported.

Instead, the White House announced that Pence would be traveling to Camp David with the president on Friday to meet with the national security team for a meeting on South Asia strategy.

Before flying back to Washington, however, Pence is still scheduled to travel to Panama, where he will meet with the country's president and tour the newly enlarged Panama canal.
