Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell called President Donald Trump's apparent comparison of Russian President Vladimir Putin's human rights violations to American actions "bizarre."
In an interview on "CBS This Morning," Morell said it appears Trump doesn't actually comprehend what Putin has done over the years.
"It suggests, he doesn't have a good understanding of what Putin has done over a very long period of time," he said. "(Putin) has killed dozens of dozens of journalists, of political opponents… both inside of Russia and outside of Russia."
Morell said it is unfair to compare what Putin has done to political opponents to what the U.S. has done overseas to defend the nation from serious threats.
"It's a very bizarre statement," he said of Trump's comments. "I think he has some special affection for Putin that is a result of something that we don't fully understand.
"What we saw was Putin praising Trump during the campaign and Trump in turn praising Putin. It could be as simple as that.
"There is some special bond here that seems to be overriding the facts and the interests of the United States of America."
USA Today reports that the Kremlin is demanding an apology from Fox News after Bill O'Reilly called Putin a killer during an interview with Trump.
Trump replied: "There are a lot of killers. We've got a lot of killers. Well, you think our country's so innocent."
