Donald Trump needs to embrace "federalism and separation of powers" to be a "whole lot better off as a candidate," conservative GOP Sen. Mike Lee said Monday.
In an interview on Fox News'
"Fox & Friends," the Utah senator said he's still not endorsed the GOP presumptive candidate, but would like to see him adopt a "constitutional agenda" to prove he'll be a conservative in the White House.
"I would love to see him embrace the kind of reforms that I call for in my book,
'Our Lost Constitution: The Willful Subversion of America's Founding Document' embrace the kind of structural constitutional reforms that I outline in particular," Lee said.
"I'd love to see him go after federalism and separation of powers," Lee said. "I'll tell you, if Donald Trump embraced those two principles outlined in this book, I think we'd be a whole lot better off as a country and he'd be a whole lot better off as a candidate."
Lee endorsed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in March, and last month said Trump "scares me to death . . . so does Hillary Clinton. There is no easy choice right now,"
The Hill reported at the time.
But asked Monday what his his message to Trump today would be, Lee remarked, "Move forward."
"Embrace a structural constitutional agenda, one that shows that he's ready to govern as a conservative, not just a political conservative but a constitutional conservative," Lee told "Fox & Friends."
"One who respects limitations placed on them and is willing to follow them."
