Huckabee: GOP 'Need to Get in Step With Their Own Party'

It's time for Republicans in Congress to begin "acting like Republicans" and work with President Donald Trump on his agenda, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Tuesday.

He added that the perceived instability at the White House is not at fault for lawmakers' failures to get key legislation like Obamacare repeal passed.

"You have a bunch of people in Congress who are Republicans, but they were never Trumpers," Huckabee told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "If they drain the swamp some of them will be drained with it. I don't see it as much a White House issue as a leadership issue in the House and Senate."

Republicans, he continued, need to recognize that Americans voted Trump into office and the party overwhelmingly nominated him.

"They need to get in step with their own party more than get in step with Donald Trump," Huckabee said, "and when I say that, [I mean] get in step with the American people who are sick and tired of Washington as usual and want there to be some change, or I think some of them will be changed out in the next election.

Meanwhile, Trump knows there needs to be more discipline in the White House, Huckabee said, and he believes new Chief of Staff John Kelly is the person to accomplish that.

"If a four-star Marine general can't get it done, it can't happen," Huckabee said. "I think it's a smart move to put Gen. Kelly in place. He is a good person, a strong person, and I really believe that the president recognizes that he needs to bring some order and discipline to the White House and John Kelly is just the guy to make that happen."

Huckabee said he also disagrees with comments made by Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who has said some of Trump's policies are foreign to conservative thinking.

"I think the problem is you've got globalists like Jeff Flake who are in total disarray with real conservatives," Huckabee said. "Conservatives want America to be strong, not interested in being global and melting into a great big international economy. They want Americans to have good paychecks. We do believe in free trade but that it's fair and not getting sucker punched by China, people in Europe and around the world."

Trump, he continued, is enacting pro-life and pro-business policies, and the stock market is reaching new highs.

"That sure didn't happen when Republicans were running things just in Congress and Obama was president," Huckabee said. "Give this president some credit for some extraordinary successes."
