Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg has quietly emerged as one of the top political donors of 2016 — contributing more than $65 million to an assortment of candidates and issues, Politico reports, and that doesn't include a penny toward the presidential race.

Bloomberg, who is staunchly independent, gives to both Democrats and Republicans who endorse issues he supports. This election year, he has contributed to campaigns for local gun control and soda tax, as well as 18 candidates, according to Politico.

But aside from his speech at the Democratic National Convention, where he blasted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, he has stayed away from the race for the White House.

"This is the most aggressive he has ever been for any presidential candidate — he felt that strongly about this election," said Howard Wolfson, one of his advisers, according to Politico.

"When you speak rarely, it carries more power, and that applied here. The convention speech was most effective standing on its own."

The $65 million in contributions also includes money to back personal friends like Arizona Sen. John McCain and Pennsylvania Gov. Pat Toomey, Politico reports.

About $5 million went to support of soda taxes in San Francisco and Oakland, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco reports.

Bloomberg is "waging an anti-sugar crusade" and has previously contributed to soda tax campaigns in Philadelphia and Berkley, CBS reports.
