Republicans are concerned that West Virginia state attorney general Patrick Morrisey has failed to be a strong contender to defeat Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. in the November midterm elections, Politico reported.

West Virginia’s Republicans are depending on Trump’s support for Morrisey, to put him back within range of a win.

"The recognition that Senator Morrisey would be a very good ally of President Trump, that in and of itself makes this race very competitive," said Mitch Carmichael, the Republican president of West Virginia’s state Senate, Politico reported.

Morrisey fully supports Trump. "The president is very committed to this race, and he loves the state passionately. That’s going to matter in November. He knows and Vice President (Mike) Pence knows that when push comes to shove, Joe will say no. Joe’s never going to be a deciding vote in favor of West Virginia conservative values," said Morrisey, Politico reported.

The West Virginia senator should be an easier target because he is an incumbent Democrat in a state where Donald trump won two-thirds of the vote in 2016 and remains popular. However, Manchin is comfortably in the lead in public and private polling, the report said.

In an analysis of major polling, Manchin is up by seven over Morrisey, 49.3 percent to 42.3 percent, RealClearPolitics reported.

Manchin also has supported Trump. He was the first Democrat to meet with Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, and he has voted with the president 60 percent of the time, more than any Republiican, Politico reported.

A Democrat retaining a Senate seat would be a blow to Republicans, who are aiming to keep their 51-49 Senate majority, the report said.
