In Michigan, lawmakers are looking into requiring voters to show identification when they vote.

Republican State Rep. Lisa Posthumus Lyons sponsored the proposal that would change the rule on voters who don't present ID when they vote. The new proposal gives voters a provisional ballot, but they would have to provide proof of their identity and their address at the county clerk's office within 10 days, according to The Hill.

For those who cannot afford an ID card, an affidavit at the clerk's office and a copy of their birth certificate would be required. The proposal allows an exemption for those whose religious beliefs prevent them from being photographed, the Hill's report said.

At the bill's first hearing Tuesday, the Hill reported that Democrats and civil liberty groups said the proposal was aimed at keeping some voters away from the polls, mainly those who were likely to vote for Democratic candidates.

The new rule would put Michigan's voter ID law among the most stringent in the U.S. Only seven other states (Wisconsin, Kansas, Indiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia) require the signing of an affidavit and then later having to provide proof of their identity.

Michigan is among 34 states that require voters to show ID when voting, the Hill reported.

The Detroit News reported that the state's elected officials were to begin a recount of the presidential election, which Green Party candidate Jill Stein formally requested. President-elect Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 10,704 votes in the state, the report said.

"As we've experienced in several elections here in Michigan, every vote counts," Lyons said in the Hill's report.
