Mich. Poll: GOP Gov. Snyder Trails Democrat Schauer by 4 Points

Wednesday, 05 Jun 2013 03:20 PM

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is trailing former Democratic Rep. Mark Schauer by 4 percentage points in next year's gubernatorial election, according to a new poll.

A survey of 697 Michigan voters taken May 30-June 2 found that Schauer was favored by 42 percent compared to Snyder's 38 percent.

The survey by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling was the first since Schauer announced his candidacy for governor on May 28. But previous polls had showed him leading Snyder by 4 to 5 percentage points before he entered the race.

"Schauer's initial lead has a lot more to do with Snyder than it does with himself," Public Policy Polling officials said in a statement, noting that Snyder "continues to be one of the most unpopular governors in the country with only 40 percent of voters approving of him."

According to Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, Snyder's role in the passage last December of right-to-work legislation is an issue for him as he faces re-election.

The survey found that 50 percent of voters are opposed to the new law, compared to 40 percent who support it.

“Rick Snyder’s numbers have been in a holding pattern since December,” said Debnam. “His approval numbers continue to be poor and he continues to lag behind his potential opposition for next year.”
