Michelle Obama Tackling Politics in Husband's Second Term

By    |   Saturday, 24 May 2014 05:27 PM

Now that her husband is in his second term of office, first lady Michelle Obama is spreading her wings into policy fights and more and is no longer keeping clear of politics.

This month, she spoke out on the kidnappings of 200 Nigerian girls through Instagram and then in her first solo appearance on the White House's weekly address, taking a spot usually used by President Barack Obama, reports The Hill.

She also got involved in Capitol Hill politics after House Republicans threatened a rollback on federal school lunch standards, prompting her to hold a conference call to rally supporters against the planned bill, reports The Washington Post.

Obama won't head to the hill and meet with lawmakers herself, a senior administration official told The Hill, but she will continue her crusade taking the messages on healthy eating to parents and children. On Tuesday, she has planned a meeting with school leaders and nutrition experts, and will stress "the importance of students, parents, school officials, community leaders, and health advocates" to help protect the program.

In addition, she remains popular, even though her husband's poll numbers are dropping, so she'll be working to help Democrats with their mid-term election bids, and is expected to campaign as much as she did in 2010.

"She's popular because she plays to several different constituencies," said Ohio University professor Katherine Jellison.

Sam Kass, the White House chef who serves as senior policy advisor for nutrition policy and as executive director of Obama's "Let's Move!" program, said Mrs. Obama is "deeply concerned about what she’s seeing" with regard to the House Republican's school meals bill, and wants to be sure the meals program isn't derailed.

"We know we should be listening to our experts," said Kass, not politicians.
But even while Obama is becoming more active, many close to her say she will never seek political office, such as former first lady Hillary Clinton did, but they expect her to continue to play a role in politics.
