First lady Michelle Obama attacked Republican special interest groups for pouring money into politics just minutes after she had asked Democrats "to write the biggest, fattest check" to help win the midterm elections.
Speaking at a fundraiser in Chicago, she repeatedly urged donors "to dig deep" while attacking Republicans for their "obstruction"of her husband President Barack Obama's policies,
the Chicago Tribune reports.
The first lady told campaign donors at the Democratic National Committee function in the Waldorf Astoria that even though they had paid up to $20,000 per couple, more cash was needed to defeat the GOP.
"I kid you not," she said. "I'm going to be honest with you. That's what we need you to do right now. We need you to write the biggest, fattest check that you can possibly write. Writing those checks is the single most impactful thing you can do right now."
But soon afterwards she was attacking special interest groups that funnel money to Republicans. "So, yeah, there's too much money in politics," she said, according to
The Washington Times.
"There's special interests that have too much influence. But they had all that money and all that influence back in 2008 and 2012, and we still won those elections."
Back in her hometown, Mrs. Obama attacked Republicans for fighting Democrats on their efforts to reduce global warming, raise the minimum wage, and protect women's reproductive rights.
"As parents, there is nothing we wouldn't do for our children. Nothing. We always put kids' interests first. We deserve leaders across the country who are going to do the same.”
The first lady also claimed that children in some Chicago neighborhoods are facing a difficult future.
"There are kids, like the kids here in Chicago who are confronting outrageous levels of violence. Kids who are losing their lives, day after day. Shootings that devastate our communities and break our hearts and rob this country of so much talent and promise. Those kids deserve so much better than this."
Democratic Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who is facing a tough race in November against Republican Bruce Rauner, was a guest at the dinner, and the first lady urged the audience to help him over "the finish line.”
