CNN commentator Michael Smerconish said Thursday that Michael Wolff's book with scathing remarks from former chief strategist Steve Bannon was "a salacious book that has nothing to do with" President Donald Trump.

"I'm not convinced that the president is as riled about this as the White House is suggesting and as we are all making it out to be," Smerconish told host Brooke Baldwin. "I think he, for better or worse, thrives on chaos.

"This is straight out of 'Page Six' of The New York Post and probably makes him feel like he's back in midtown Manhattan."

One of Trump's private lawyers, Charles Harder, on Thursday sent a "cease and desist" letter to Wolff and his publisher, Henry Holt and Co. Inc., regarding the book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House."

Harder sent a similar letter late Wednesday to Bannon.

Wolff's book is scheduled to be released next Tuesday.

In addition, President Trump told reporters Thursday that Bannon "called me a great man last night.

"He obviously changed his tune pretty quick," he said.

Still, the White House continued its attacks on the book Thursday, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that it contained "numerous mistakes" and that the work was "just full of tabloid gossip.

"It is sad, pathetic," she said.

Smerconish told Baldwin that he doesn't doubt whether Bannon said those things in the book — and probably not even Trump.

"I don't think there is much doubt that Bannon said those things," he said. "He's not disavowed any of those statements.

"He's not, for example, disavowed the treasonous statement.

"Even though there is a lot of back and forth what's factual in the book, I think it's pretty clear the president believed Bannon said that or the president would not have released the statement he did yesterday."

Smerconish added that, since he's not convinced that Trump is troubled by Bannon's comments, the president may well be trying to increase sales of Wolff's book by attacking it and keeping the media busy with covering the controversy.

"If I'm at the White House and want to sell Michael Wolff book, what am I going to do?" he asked. "I'm going to trash it.

"I'm going to threaten litigation. I might even file a writ of some kind to pursue this a bit.

"It doesn't seem like the strategy to get the media to move on from all of it," he added. "Instead, it seems like a strategy that's destined to keep us talking about it."
