Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., ripped into the FBI raid on Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, and advised the president to "lay low."
The remarks by Rounds came during a Wednesday interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt.
"This is almost like the dying throes where an organization that has been charged with trying to take down a president, and in many cases, folks on the other side expected that that’s what would happen, and they’re not getting any place, because there has been no collusion established in this," Rounds said.
"Otherwise, we’d be hearing about it. And if that’s the case, here is one more opportunity for them to irritate and try to find another incident in which they can now further investigate."
Rounds said it is clear the special counsel’s office does not have anything on the president.
Cohen’s home and office were raided by agents on Monday. Armed with a search warrant, they seized records on specific topics, including a $130,000 payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The agents were working, in part, on information provided by special counsel Robert Mueller.
"The president needs to handle his way through this, lay low, and don’t get in the middle of a tit for tat with these guys on what he’s doing on that," Rounds told Hewitt. "Get through this thing, because they don’t have anything."
