Michael Caputo: GOP Should 'Stand Up for What They Believe In'

Michael Caputo, a former campaign adviser to Donald Trump, said that Republicans should force Democrats into rejecting a continuing resolution that would fund the government, and then make them pay politically for the shutdown.

"I think Republicans should man up, stand up for what they believe in and force the Democrats to reject the continuing resolution and force a government shutdown. Then make them pay for it," Caputo said Friday on CNN's "New Day" program.

"We've seen these government shutdowns — what, 16 of them — in the last couple of decades. Half of them end up happening over a weekend. All have low impact on the essential services of the government. I know the president doesn't want to have a government shutdown, and he's working against one," Caputo said.

Democrats do not really believe in the importance of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) that covered people brought to the U.S. as children by illegal immigrants, he continued.

"We know DACA isn't important to the Democratic Party because they chose leaking an allegation that the president used some kind of expletive during intense negotiations. They chose leaking that and ruining negotiations over getting a deal for DACA," Caputo said.

Trump wants to make a deal on the DACA program, he added, and "the president is going to cut a DACA deal that even the Democrats can live with, and I think he will probably alienate some of his base with the DACA deal. The problem the Democrats have is they can't have the president in the lead on this issue … the president wants to give these DACA, these Dreamers, something to hang on to."
