Miami Republicans are having a hard time recruiting for retiring Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's House seat and worry that it might be unwinnable, the Miami Herald reports.

Ros-Lehtinen, the first Latina and Cuban-American elected to Congress, has been a GOP rock in the Democratic stronghold that encompasses Little Havana and most of downtown Miami, but Republicans fear she might have been a one of a kind, the Herald reports.

“There’s no person like Ileana because she was so many firsts in her political career,” Miami-Dade schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho told the Herald.

Carvalho is one of many potential candidates approached by Republicans who have turned down solicitations to replace Ros-Lehtinen, the Herald reported.

Despite Ros-Lehtinen's active recruitment of top-notch Republican candidates to replace her, efforts are coming up empty.

No winnable candidate means national fundraising effort will shift to other parts of the country to bolster the efforts of viable GOP candidates elsewhere.

"They have to spend in my district. I don’t want national groups to think it’s not winnable,” Ros-Lehtinen told the Herald. "They’ve got to be all in. I will beat down their doors if they take my district and write it off. The district is totally winnable for the right candidate."

The top Republican candidate so far, Bruno Barreiro, has raised just $218,000, a total that lags behind six Democrats who are seeking the seat, the Herald reports.

Another Republican candidate to replace Ros-Lehtinen made headlines for all the wrong reasons; Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera claims she was abducted by aliens as a child.

"Obviously, the worse the candidate, the more money you need to get elected," Barreiro told the Herald. “I really don’t want to accept those rumblings out there that this is not a winnable seat."
