Funding of $1.8 billion for a new FBI headquarters building in Washington, D.C., included in the Senate Republicans' coronavirus stimulus bill is "not a dealbreaker" for the White House if it isn't included in the final legislation, even though it had been part of President Donald Trump's priority of updating the building, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Wednesday.
"This was part of the president’s priority of updating the FBI building, keeping it in Washington, D.C.,” McEnany said on "CBS This Morning." "It’s been one of the things that’s been mentioned that’s in this bill. It’s part of one of the president’s priorities, and it’s been a priority for several months . . . The president's made clear this is what he wants to see."
But still, it's "not a dealbreaker," she added, because unemployment benefits is the "the ultimate priority" for the president.
"The FBI part is one portion, a small portion, of what is an overarching bill on COVID," said McEnany. "The priority, as he said yesterday, is the unemployment benefits."
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Tuesday he opposes including the FBI money and all other measures not related to the government's response to the virus.
McEnany also on Tuesday commented on Trump's continued endorsement of the use of hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of coronavirus, and about his decision to share a video by a controversial Houston doctor who said masks aren't needed and who touted the drug.
"The president's always been clear that this drug which has been approved for 65 years and has a good safety profile, should only be used in the context of a prescription from your doctor," McEnany said. "He wants to save lives."
She added that the mask comment was a "three-second" remark in a video of over five minutes that was used "for the president to illustrate his views on hydroxychloroquine."
"He's been very clear that wearing a mask is patriotic," she said. "That was not the intent in tweeting out that specific video."
