Ronna McDaniel said she thinks upping the purchase age of long guns - including semi-automatic weapons - to 21 "is on the table," the Republican National Committee chairwoman told the Washington Examiner.

President Donald Trump has publicly touted the idea of raising the age and continues to assert his belief that the National Riffle Association will back him on that, though the gun lobby has explicitly said it does not support raising the age, currently set at 18.

"I think the president's been very thoughtful in what he's proposing," McDaniel told the Examiner. "He's listening to these parents. I think universally, we want to make sure our schools are safe. Period.

"We'll see where that goes. I think it's on the table," McDaniel told the Examiner. "We have to look at the whole picture."

Trump also has surfaced the idea of arming a percentage of teachers who would be specially trained in firearms, but backed off that somewhat over the weekend, saying it would be in the hands of states to act — or not — on that.
