McConnell Mocks Democratic Rival in Bizarre Rhyming Video

Just a day after Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes jumped into the battle to try to unseat U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, he hit back with a bizarre, but catchy, video.

The video suggests that Lundergan Grimes is inexperienced, left wing, and intractable, set to a jingle that asks repeatedly "What rhymes with Alison Lundergan Grimes?"

The answers, according to McConnell's people, are, "Not ready for prime time," "Sticks to the party line," and "Left-wing mime."

There are several clips of Grimes delivering speeches and conducting interviews as well as an unexplained clip of President Barack Obama dancing with TV host Ellen DeGeneres — whose head was superimposed with a supersized picture of Lundergan Grimes.

Adding to the tongue-in-cheek flavor of the video, McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton suggested the ad was aimed at helping the veteran senator's opponent. He told Buzzfeed the start of her campaign had been described as "maybe the worst campaign rollout in Kentucky history" by the media.

"We hate to see someone flounder so badly, so we decided to give Alison a helping hand," Benton said. "We at Team Mitch are nothing if not magnanimous, so we decided to welcome her to the race with what we imagine her campaign theme song might be. The song highlights her signature initiative to 'preserve, protect and promote' Alison Lundergan Grimes."
