Potential McConnell Challenger Buys Airtime

By    |   Friday, 19 July 2013 10:40 PM EDT

Matt Bevin, a conservative Kentucky-based investment executive rumored to be on the verge of announcing his intention to challenge Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., for his Senate seat, has reserved air time in Louisville and Bowling Green beginning next week, Politico reports.

The Senate Minority Leader’s camp responded to Bevin’s move in a statement dripping with disdain.

“Matthew Griswold Bevin is not a Kentucky Conservative, he is merely an East Coast con man," said Jesse Benton, McConnell’s campaign manager.

“While it is sad to see someone who claims to be a Republican doing Barack Obama’s bidding, his campaign is nothing more than a nuisance.”

Bevin adviser Sarah Durand responded in kind via email.

“Matt Bevin will shortly be making an announcement about his political future,” Durand wrote.

“It is unfortunate that Mud Slinging Mitch is already up to his old tricks of attack and mislead. Kentucky voters deserve better.”

If Bevin does indeed enter the race, his presence will amp up a campaign that is already intense.

McConnell has been in full campaign mode, directing his attacks on Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Kentucky secretary of state.

A super PAC supporting McConnell announced on Friday a new ad buy targeting Grimes, totaling some $270,000 worth of commercials.
