A GOP member of the House Judiciary Committee on Sunday defended President Donald Trump’s controversial July 25 call to Urkaine, saying the president doesn’t use “the smarmy talk of politicians.”

In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., said the call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy just showed that Trump is a blunt-speaking businessman.

“He didn't use delicate language of diplomacy in that conversation, that’s true,” McClintock said. “He also doesn’t use the smarmy talk of politicians.”

“What you hear from Donald J. Trump is the blunt talk of a Manhattan businessman,” he continued. “He says what he means and he means what he says.”

According to McClintock, who has held his seat for a decade, said Trump “was entirely within his constitutional authority and was following the statute that Congress adopted in granting that aid.”

The impeachment inquiry in the House was triggered by accusations that Trump was tying the congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine to its conducting corruption investigations that would include former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
