The Chinese Communist Party was engaged in the "worst coverup in human history" with its extreme efforts to conceal the deadly coronavirus that was about to cause a pandemic and must be held accountable, Rep. Michael McCaul said Thursday.
"We know when this virus first appeared Dec.1, actually back to mid-November, the Chinese Communist Party went in and detained eight of the doctors who were sounding the alarm that we had a different kind of virus here that was more lethal," the Texas Republican said on Fox News" "America's Newsroom." "After that point in time, they went into the laboratory and destroyed lab samples in an attempt to cover up and also control the investigation."
Further, the Chinese were warning the World Health Organization personnel in January that there was human-to-human transmission, but the agency's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus "tested the tiebreaker" in deciding not to warn the world of a global pandemic.
"Then finally, here's a festival going on in China at that time called the Spring Festival," said McCaul. "Five million people (left) Wuhan and traveled throughout China and then millions of people from China traveled internationally. This could have been stopped. This could have been contained but instead, now, we have a global pandemic."
Show host Ed Henry pointed out that there has been no evidence that the WHO was involved in a coverup, but McCaul said the organization has a responsible role to play. However, he said he doesn't think it can carry out that role under Tedros.
"I think he is a puppet of the Chinese Communist Party and he touted the one-China policy against Taiwan and would not allow Taiwan into the WHO," said McCaul. "He gave speeches in China and when he was foreign minister in Ethiopia they received for billions of dollars of foreign assistance. We can't have any confidence in the WHO moving forward as long as Tedros is at the top."
