McCaul: US Will Not 'Idly' Stand by While Iran Holds Hostages

By    |   Monday, 17 June 2019 09:00 AM

The United States will not stand by and allow Iran to continue to hold American hostages, Rep. Michael McCaul said Monday, while saying he thinks it would be "great" if Iranians would rise on their own against President Hassan Rouhani and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"They are holding American prisoners in Iran," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "I can't think of any worse place to be imprisoned, by the way."

The situation is "almost like 1979 all over again," said McCaul, noting that he's in favor of a bill to put additional sanctions on Iran until hostages and prisoners are released.

He said he could not specify how many people are being held hostage, but "it's significant to warrant action," and that President Donald Trump is "absolutely" on the same page he is about the situation.

"We are not going to stand by idly and let somebody like Iran take Americans hostage," said McCaul. "I think Jimmy Carter was such a sign of weakness in 1979, when the ayatollah took over in the first place. I think it's time for the ayatollah to go."

McCaul also commented on the news that Iran has vowed to break current nuclear materials stockpiles limits, saying it's a sign that Iran is "getting desperate."

He added he is "absolutely" sure that Iran was behind attacks on two tankers last week and four tankers before that.

"The surveillance I have seen provides the evidence that they're IRGC boats that put the mines on the ships," said McCaul. "They tried to shoot one of these drones out of the sky and they failed."

The U.S. ships that have been sent to the Persian Gulf are a "strong sign' that such actions must stop, and the United States and Iran must come to the negotiations table, said McCaul.
