Homeland Security Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul on Monday called for the Department of Justice Inspector General to expand its investigation to include the FBI's surveillance application of a onetime Trump campaign aide, the Washington Examiner reports.

In the wake of the memo released by House Intelligence Republicans on Friday, McCaul, R-Texas, wants the IG to render a decision on the validity of the FBI's Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) application to spy on Carter Page.

"The inspector general is looking at this particular investigation, but I would respectfully request and recommend that the inspector general expand its investigation into this FISA warrant application to determine whether it was valid or not," the Examiner quoted McCaul.

McCaul made the comments after giving a speech at George Washington University.

Between purported indiscretions that went into the FISA request — according to the memo released by Rep. Devin Nunes — and seemingly partisan texts exchanged between FBI agents, McCaul wants to ensure objectivity in the FBI and DOJ

"When I was at the Justice Department in the public integrity section, we prided ourselves on not being partisan. Nobody knew what your political affiliation was and that was for a reason 'cause we were not supposed to bring our politics into that office because it undermines the integrity of the institution and the credibility. And that should not have happened in this case," the Examiner quoted McCaul.
