Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill will not attend the Democratic National Convention in September, an aide said on Tuesday.
According to an aide, McCaskill will spend the week campaigning in her state. She is among several vulnerable Democrats seeking re-election in Republican-leaning districts who are avoiding the convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 3-6.

The convention is expected to be a showcase of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.
Missouri was one of the few swing states that did not go for Obama in 2008, and his approval ratings continue to remain low there.
“In years when Claire is on the ballot, she has historically not gone to the convention,” the aide said, “because she believes it’s important to stay in Missouri to talk to voters.”
The aide stressed that McCaskill did not attend the 2004 Democratic National Convention, when she was running for governor of Missouri. She did attend the 2008 parley.
The aide said the decision was just made late Tuesday.
