Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill has become the first sitting member of Congress to put her name behind the effort to recruit Hillary Clinton to run for president that is being spearheaded by the "Ready for Hillary" super PAC.
On Tuesday, Ready for Hillary
released a statement saying the Missouri senator is endorsing the movement to recruit the former first lady to run for president.
"Hillary Clinton had to give up her political operation while she was making us proud, representing us around the world as an incredible secretary of state, and that's why Ready for Hillary is so critical," McCaskill said, according to the statement.
Urgent: Is Obama Telling the Truth on IRS, Benghazi Scandals?
"It's important that we start early, building a grass-roots army from the ground up, and effectively using the tools of the Internet — all things that President Obama did so successfully — so that if Hillary does decide to run, we'll be ready to help her win."
In February, McCaskill said that if Clinton decided to run for president, she would be "working my heart out" for her campaign,
The St. Louis Beacon reported at the time.
The two-term senator has had a rocky relationship with the Clintons in the past. In 2005, she said she worried that if Hillary Clinton ran for president in 2008, it might hurt her chances at the gubernatorial bid she was planning to make, the Beacon reported. She ended up running for U.S. Senate instead.
And McCaskill was forced to apologize after she said Bill Clinton had been a great president, but "I don't want him near my daughter."
The relationship became even more strained when she became the first female senator to endorse President Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic primary and became a major surrogate for Obama's campaign while Hillary Clinton was also seeking the nomination.
According to the statement released by Ready for Hillary, McCaskill is grateful to the super PAC for reaching out to 2008 Obama supporters.
"They aren't only reaching out to folks who supported Hillary in 2008," she said. "They're helping to show that regardless of who you supported for president back then, we can all agree today that there is nobody better equipped to be our next president than Hillary Clinton."
