President Donald Trump's attacks on the press are empowering foreign leaders to "use his words" when they suppress the media, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., wrote Wednesday in The Washington Post.

While Trump has threatened to give "fake news awards" to reporters and news providers that he disagrees with, "these efforts are being closely watched by foreign leaders who are already using his words as cover as they silence and shutter one of the key pillars of democracy," McCain wrote.

The Trump administration's officials have condemned violence against reporters abroad, but Trump has continued his anti-journalist rhetoric, McCain wrote.

"The phrase 'fake news' — granted legitimacy by an American president — is being used by autocrats to silence reporters, undermine political opponents, stave off media scrutiny and mislead citizens," the senator wrote in The Post.

The senator cited a Committee to Protect Journalists report that said 2017 set a record for the number of journalists that had been imprisoned around the world.

The U.S. must continue its role as "the defender of human rights and democratic principles throughout the world," McCain wrote.

"Journalists play a major role in the promotion and protection of democracy and our unalienable rights, and they must be able to do their jobs freely," McCain wrote in The Post.

McCain also noted criticism of Trump on Saturday, when he tweeted a link to a New York Times column critical of the president's reported comments on Haiti and other African nations.
