A junior Democratic senator from Hawaii said Monday she is skeptical of Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker's claim that the Russia investigation is nearing its end because "he is a total Trump supporter."
Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, was on CNN shortly after Whitaker made the remark about special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.
"For one thing, I don't think that Whitaker should even be the acting attorney general," Hirono said.
"He is a total Trump supporter and I'm very cautious about anything that he has to say."
President Donald Trump appointed Whitaker to serve as the temporary attorney general after he fired Jeff Sessions in November. Former Attorney General William Barr, who served under President George H.W. Bush, has been nominated to serve as permanent AG and appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month for his confirmation hearings.
