Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., has cancelled appearances in Texas and Alabama after receiving a "very serious death threat," CNN is reporting.

The threat came after Waters encouraged protesters to harass members of President Donald Trump's Cabinet when they are out in public, the news network said.

"There was one very serious death threat made against me on Monday from an individual in Texas which is why my planned speaking engagements in Texas and Alabama were cancelled this weekend," Waters said.

"This is just one in several very serious threats the United States Capitol Police are investigating in which individuals threatened to shoot, lynch, or cause me serious bodily harm."

Waters had been scheduled to address the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women's Annual Legislative conference, which opened Friday in Birmingham, Alabama, according to AL.com

The group's president, Karen Camper, confirmed Waters had cancelled because of security reasons, the website said.

The Washington Post said details of Waters' Texas trip were not immediately known.

Waters added: "As the president has continued to lie and falsely claim that I encouraged people to assault his supporters, while also offering a veiled threat that I should 'be careful', even more individuals are leaving (threatening) messages and sending hostile mail to my office," she said.
