The media is focused on news of there being chaos among people in the White House, but American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp said Monday that he's found his interactions with President Donald Trump's administration to be "pretty level."

"There's a lot of activity and energy and announcements coming from the White House," Schlapp told CNN "New Day" co-host Chris Cuomo. "I think the news media seems to be focused very much on some kind of chaos amongst the personnel at the White House and of course there are stories there too."

However, Schlapp said his interactions aren't only level, but he believes a "good system is in place."

There is no question, though, that Trump wants to see action, particularly since Republicans and Congress, especially in the Senate, "are moving at that slow, glacial place."

"I think that makes President Trump uneasy," he said. "He wants to push his agenda every day."

He did agree that Trump's White House may have started out rough at the beginning of his administration, but he also believes Chief of Staff John Kelly has brought a sense of order.

Cuomo pointed out the scandal with former senior aide Rob Porter, who resigned after reports had surfaced accusing him of domestic violence incidents with his ex-wives, and how Kelly had said at first he didn't know about the accusations.

"I don't think you should call the general a liar," Schlapp retorted. "I don't think that's appropriate."

Cuomo denied that he'd called Kelly a liar, but Schlapp said he'd "used the euphemism."

"If I want to call you a liar I'll do it right to your face and they'll be a smile on mine," Cuomo told him.

Meanwhile, Schlapp said his organization will examine Trump's call for tariffs on steel and aluminum imports "carefully."

"The aspect of this which did not get teased out very well over the weekend is the national security impact on the fact that we have so few factories," said Schlapp. "There are some high level military industrial complex needs that come from especially the aluminum and steel industries and we have to make sure we're not just going to be relying on overseas importers of these products."

Also on Monday, Schlapp talked about gun control, saying that he does not agree with raising the legal age from 18 to 21 to buy a gun.

"I would hate to think that a woman who is not quite the age of 21 can't protect herself by getting the gun she needs to take care of someone and give her security," said Schlapp. "I want to make sure people can always protect themselves in those situations."
