Massachusetts Senate Hopefuls Suspend Campaigns

All five candidates in the special Massachusetts Senate race have suspended their campaigns following the deadly blasts that hit the Boston Marathon on Monday, Politico reported Tuesday.

Democratic Rep. Ed Markey, the front-runner for the April 30 primary to replace former senator and now Secretary of State John Kerry, said he was disturbed and saddened by the tragic loss of life and injuries caused by the explosions. He announced he would suspend  campaign activities, including fundraising and television advertisements.

Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch also suspended campaigning, saying in a tweet, “We encourage all our supporters to spend time with their loved ones.”

Gabriel Gomez, one of the three GOP candidates, who also suspended his campaign, was running in the race and finished not long before the blasts went off. He tweeted that his prayers were with all the runners and spectators.

Republican candidate Michael Sullivan also announced he was canceling all campaign events for the day and described the bombings as “horrific and cowardly acts of violence.”

Sullivan said in a statement, “I am confident in the combined efforts of the FBI, Boston Police Department, state police and ATF, in their investigation into these explosions that, sadly, have occurred on Patriot’s Day — a day with much local and national symbolism.”

Republican state Rep. Dan Winslow also ordered his campaign to suspend all activities. He said his heart goes out to the injured.
