Small Business Advocacy Group Turns Against Landrieu

By    |   Wednesday, 24 Sep 2014 09:37 PM

A small business advocacy group that's praised Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in the past is ditching her this election cycle due to her support for Obamacare.

Instead, the National Federal of Independent Business announced on its website Wednesday that it would endorse Louisiana's Republican Senate nominee, Rep. Bill Cassidy, and is putting up radio and Internet ads as well as a website page touting his candidacy.

The business group had previously praised Landrieu's work on protecting small businesses tom the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's oversight, and gave her its Guardian of Small Business Award before the 2008 Senate election, the Washington Free Beacon reports.

But they found more to admire in Cassidy this time around – especially in the difference between the candidates' stands on Obamacare.

"Our members support the candidates who support small business, and Congressman Cassidy's record speaks for itself," Lisa Goeas, the group's vice president for political and grassroots, said on the NFIB website.

"Cassidy has earned a 97-percent lifetime NFIB voting record in the U.S. House of Representatives."

The organization specifically cited Cassidy for his votes on energy policy, the National Labor Relations Board, family leave, and for his support of delaying the individual mandate in Obamacare.

"On the other hand, Mary Landrieu voted against repealing Obamacare," Goeas said.

"She voted against an amendment that would have protected individuals and small-business owners from higher taxes. She voted against permanently eliminating the estate tax, which makes it harder for people to pass their family businesses to their children."

"Louisiana's Main Street communities, businesses and families are tired of empty campaign promises, and simply can’t afford six more years of Mary Landrieu."

The endorsement could translate into a boost for Cassidy, who holds a narrow lead over Landrieu, according to a Real Clear Politics average.
