U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall told Newsmax TV on Wednesday that his primary victory for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Pat Roberts takes Kansas off the table as a potential target for Democrats in the November election.
Marshall, 59, prevailed in a 11-man field Tuesday night, capturing more than 40% of the more than 394,000 votes cast, outdistancing top challenger Kris Kobach, the former Kansas secretary of state and state Republican Party chairman, by 14% or more than 50,000 votes.
“I think this 14-point win is going to send a message to the Democrats to not mess with Kansas,” Marshall said on “Spicer & Co.” “They spent $5 million-$6 million against our candidacy. They wanted Kris Kobach to be the candidate because they could beat him in the general election.
“So hopefully this will send the Democrats packing, and we can take some of those Republican resources and use them in different states.”
Marshall, a licensed obstetrician, is in his second term representing Kansas’ 1st Congressional District, a largely rural area comprising more than half of the state in the west and north. He will be opposed by Barbara Bollier, a Republican-turned-Democrat state senator. She defeated Robert Tillman with nearly 86 percent of the more than 180,000 votes cast.
Kansas has been represented in the U.S. Senate by Republicans exclusively since 1939. The last Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat was George McGill, a one-term senator whose only victory for upper house was in 1932. Roberts, 84, is retiring after four terms in the Senate.
Marshall, a former captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, assured host Sean Spicer that President Donald Trump, who in 2016 was victorious in all but two of Kansas’ 105 counties, three of four congressional districts and took the state with 56% of the vote to Hillary Clinton’s 36%, will repeat his win in the state.
“President Trump is going to carry this state. I will guarantee that," Marshall said. "He’s in great shape here. Kansans have his back. They support the president. I expect the Democrats to play in this, but when they see that they’re behind 10 or 15 points here in a week or two I bet they take some of their resources to other states.”
