On Eve of Mass. Senate Election, Markey Up by 10

By    |   Monday, 24 June 2013 03:01 PM EDT

Massachusetts Senate candidate Ed Markey is leading GOP rival Gabriel Gomez by 10 percentage points going into Tuesday's special election, according to a new Suffolk University poll.

The poll of 500 likely voters conducted June 21-23 puts Markey ahead by a 52 percent to 42 percent margin, making it even more likely that the Democrat who has served 37 years in the House will be moving on to the Senate.

"These numbers suggest that tomorrow night Ed Markey will make the transformation from congressman to senator-elect," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston.

"All eyes will be watching to see how Markey's final vote tally stacks up against Sen. Elizabeth Warren's eight-point win over GOP incumbent Scott Brown last November."

Markey's name identification could end up being the key component in a victory, given that voter turnout is expected to be low.

Another poll of 653 voters released Monday by Western New England University Polling Institute found that 28 percent of respondents say they have a little or no interest in the election, while just 42 percent indicated 'a lot' of interest.
