Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., will work remotely while he quarantines due to COVID-19 exposure, the senator's office said Wednesday.

Warner did not test positive but was exposed to someone who had tested positive for the coronavirus, spokesperson Rachel Cohen said in a statement, per The Hill.

"Sen. Warner learned today that a close contact has tested positive for COVID-19," Cohen said. "While Sen. Warner has tested negative, out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with guidance provided by the Office of the Attending Physician, he will be working remotely during his quarantine period."

Warner joins a list of House and Senate Democrats and Republicans who either have tested positive or have quarantined due to exposure to people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Elected to the Senate in 2008, Warner will become chair of the Senate Intelligence committee once leadership officially announces a power-sharing agreement.

In December, Rep.-elect Luke Letlow, R-La., died from COVID-19 before being sworn in for his first term in office. His widow is running for his seat in a special election in March.

Vaccines by Pfizer and Moderna are the only two on the market after receiving emergency approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Recent mutations of the virus coming from South Africa might require the vaccines to be modified.

More than 100 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 worldwide, with the U.S. leading in the most cases and deaths during the pandemic.
