Rep. Sanford: Failure to Pledge Allegiance to Trump Hurt Re-election Bid

Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., who lost the Republican primary after President Donald Trump sent out a Twitter blast against him, acknowledged his failure to pledge allegiance to the president hurt him.

"We swear an allegiance to the Constitution and we pledge allegiance to the flag and what was weird about this race that I've never experienced before in any race I've been a part of was an allegiance question where people say: ‘Are you for or against the president," Sanford noted.

He made his remarks during an Thursday interview on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe."

"I've never before had a question of allegiance to a person, rather than allegiance to the flag and Constitution," he said. "And to a degree that's what this race came down to.".

Sanford maintained that he had supported Trump "89 percent of the time."

But he acknowledged the president’s blast did work against him.

Sanford said Trump’s focus on personal allegiances is a "little outside the form to say the least."

And Sanford conceded his primary lost left him discouraged about the state of politics in the United States.

He was defeated by state Rep. Katie Arrington, who spent her campaign blasting him as a "Never Trumper."
