A move to convince former astronaut Mark Kelly to run for the Senate in Arizona has been launched by a group that backs candidates with scientific backgrounds, Roll Call is reporting.
The group, 314 Action, is hoping to get Kelly, who is married to former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., into the race against Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz.
The group is funding a six-figure digital ad campaign on social media, according to Roll Call. The ads will direct people to go to a website and sign a petition urging Kelly to enter the race.
“I think we’re going to see an overwhelming level of support for Mark Kelly to run for the United States Senate,” said Joshua Morrow, executive director of 314 Action. “Mark is probably going to be the best-situated candidate to win.”
McSally was appointed to the Senate to replace Sen. Jon Kyl, a Republican. The seat had belonged to Sen. John McCain. McSally had lost the race for Arizona’s other Senate seat to Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.
