Iowa Sen. Mark Chelgren is pushing to require state universities and colleges to consider political affiliations when filling a faculty member's job.

The Des Moines Register reported a bill introduced by Chelgren, a Republican, seeks to achieve greater political diversity among professors at state schools.

The bill would initiate a hiring freeze until the number of registered Republicans and Democrats on the faculties fall within 10 percent of each other, according to the newspaper.

"I'm under the understanding that right now they can hire people because of diversity," Chelgren said. "They want to have people of different thinking, different processes, different expertise. So this would fall right into category with what existing hiring practices are."

Chelgren said he is concerned about "extreme views on either side."

Professors would be allowed to register as "no-party" and would not be counted, the newspaper reported. And those seeking to be hired could change their party affiliation in order to be considered.

"We have an awful lot of taxpayer dollars that go to support these fine universities," he said. "[Students] should be able to go to their professors, ask opinions, and they should know publicly whether that professor is a Republican or Democrat or no-party affiliation, and therefore they can expect their answers to be given in as honest a way possible. But they should have the ability to ask questions of professors of different political ideologies."

The bill has been criticized by opponents as a way to block registered Democrats from being hired at the University of Iowa, Iowa State and other institutions, The Hill reported.

A similar measure, which would have required senior professors within the University of North Carolina system to reflect the ideological balance of voters within the state, died this week in the North Carolina legislature, according to the Hill.
