Rubio: Political Arguments Must Not Derail Tax Reform

Tax reform must happen, despite the political arguments that is going on about it, Sen. Marco Rubio said Wednesday.

"It just has to happen," the Florida Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"But when it comes to tax reform, this has to happen. It just has to happen. We cannot fail."

The United States is "engaged in a global competition," he added. "The world is beating us time and again because we are hurting ourselves, and we need a pro-American tax reform that allows us to rebuild our economy and give the people the opportunity to get ahead in life."

On Tuesday, Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, and Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, quarreled on Twitter over the tax reform measure. Graham warned Paul to not "screw up" tax reform by voting against the party's GOP budget proposal, and accused him of saving Obamacare by "trashing" the bill he'd proposed along with three other senators.

Paul, meanwhile, had accused Graham and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., of "torpedoing the budget by insisting on busting the budget caps for more spending."

Rubio said the matter represents a difference of opinion, but the budget plan sets up the ability "spend $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years by giving you money back so that you can spend it into the economy."

"If we came out and said we're going to spend $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years to grow government, $1.5 trillion to pay for Bernie Sanders healthcare plan, it would cost a lot more than that, $1.5 trillion free something for everybody, you know, the media, the editorial boards would be saying how enlightened it is," said Rubio.

The budget and tax cuts will result in economic growth, he said, while adding taxpayers and allowing people to spend more money.

"But to do that, first, you have to pass a budget so that we can use reconciliation, use the budget as a vehicle to use reconciliation to pass tax cuts," said Rubio.

Rubio, though, said he does not understand how having a Republican president along with Republican Congress, elected on the promise of repealing and replacing Obamacare, haven't made that happen.

Rubio said he does respect Paul's intellectual honesty and his commitment.

"Rand is a guy that when he believes something, he's not doing it for show, he believes it," said Rubio. "He has done this for a long time, and he has a right to do that. He's a key part of our team here, and he's an ally on a multiple number of issues."
