Angus King, a former independent governor in Maine, is seeking the U.S. Senate seat that retiring Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe is vacating.
Saying he will be a voice for “civility and common sense,” King announced his candidacy during a lecture Monday night at Bowdoin College in Portland, according to Fox News
. The United States is paralyzed by partisanship, he said, and “it is holding the whole country hostage.” Compromise is necessary to solve the problems of unemployment and national debt, King said.
“I think I might scare them, and that would be a good thing because Maine will be sending a message,” he said. “That if they don’t get their act together, I won’t be the last person sent their way who won’t play the game the way they want.”
Snowe, who has been a member of Congress for 33 years, announced last week that she would not seek re-election because she was frustrated with partisanship.
