The United States won't have a stable economy if its people don't have their health, and it's important to remain socially distanced to protect both from the spread of coronavirus, Sen. Maggie Hassan said Wednesday.

"The two are absolutely related," the New Hampshire Democrat told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "It is also critical we do not overwhelm our healthcare system right now. It is not just for patients who may need the ventilator and the expertise to treat this virus, it is for other patients, too. A car accident or heart attack, we need a functioning healthcare system where doctors and nurses are available to patients. If we can't slow the spread of this virus, we really run the risk of being overcapacity in the healthcare system."

Meanwhile, Hassan said "encouraging things" are coming from Democrats in the House about forwarding the $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill to President Donald Trump, and noted that it is a vital partisan piece of work.

"We need to focus on meeting this moment," said Hassan. "We haven't faced something of this magnitude pretty much since World War II."

It is also critical to get checks out to people as fast as possible through the bill, including sending money through direct deposit when that information is available, she said.

Hassan also spoke about her 31-year-old son Ben, who has cerebral palsy and is considered a high-risk person where the virus is concerned. She said he is home in New Hampshire with her husband and caregivers.

"Ben is a wonderful 31-year-old young man with a great sense of humor," she said. "He happens to be very physically disabled and we have been through significant pneumonias in the past. When I tell your viewers that it can take multiple doctors, expensive, highly specialized equipment to get Ben healthy again, I want you to think about that because this virus hits people very hard in the respiratory system."
