Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said she was appalled by President Donald Trump’s Twitter announcement that he would sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration.
The first woman to serve as the country’s secretary of state is an immigrant. She told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday that she is stunned over the president’s forthcoming executive order that will halt the immigration process.
“I really do think that the Statue of Liberty is weeping,” she said.
With many government operations shut down as the country combats the coronavirus, the immigration process already has been at a standstill. Albright called Trump’s move political.
“I think he wants to kind of shut down America, which as far as I am concerned is un-American,” she said. “We are not the kind of country that wants walls around us. We want to be out there and participate in what is going on internationally in every way.”
She said immigrants "want to help, participate and make a difference."
