Sen. Luther Strange on Monday invoked the name of Republican pariah Todd Akin in warning about the dangers of electing a social conservative like Roy Moore in Alabama's primary runoff, the Washington Examiner reported.

Akin, in August of 2012, uttered two words in a defense against abortion that sunk his Senate bid and have been a source of shame fir the GOP ever since — "legitimate rape."

Strange said Republicans can expect more of the same from Moore.

"There are a lot of people that think my opponent would be a Todd Akin, an anchor around the neck of the party for the next couple years. I have to say, knowing him, that's probably a valid concern — it really is," Strange told the Examiner at a Birmingham diner Monday.

Strange made the comments ahead of Tuesday's primary runoff.

Moore was twice removed from the bench of the Alabama Supreme Court for putting his beliefs ahead of the law, most recently for ignoring the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage.

Moore has said homosexuality should be illegal, and he told the Examiner he plans to bring "knowledge of God" to Capitol Hill if elected, looking more like a reality given his 10-point composite lead in the polls.

Not surprisingly, evangelicals — Southern Baptists — have swarmed to the side of Moore.

"You look at my opponent's record on the Alabama Supreme Court, he's really got a Democrat record. He's got the liberal record in terms of rule of law," Strange told the Examiner. "It's really ironic that some conservatives are siding with my opponent, who really has no conservative accomplishments. What has he actually done for the conservative movement?"

Strange has the support of President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, but social conservatives have amassed against him on the other side — Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity Stephen Bannon, and even Trump cabinet member Ben Carson.
