Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal isn't high enough in the polls to bother responding to his attacks, says GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump.

Jindal said during a speech to The National Press Club on Thursday that Trump is a "narcissist" and a "carnival act."

Trump is leading the 17-candidate field with more than 30 percent support. Jindal is at zero percent.

That led to speculation that Jindal went on the attack to get some much-needed attention.

Trump is known for firing back when attacked. On Thursday he shot back at Ben Carson for questioning his faith, and he was quoted in Rolling Stone on Wednesday for what most people took as an insult on Carly Fiorina's looks.

Jindal, Trump said, "did not make the debate stage and therefore I have never met him. I only respond to people that register more than one percent in the polls. I never thought he had a chance, and I've been proven right."

Jindal, appearing later Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," said he was disappointed that Trump couldn't come up with a better line.

"I thought he would do better than that," Jindal said. "I was disappointed he didn't call me ugly, I was disappointed he didn't question my faith, I was disappointed he didn't say I had low energy levels."

But Trump still has time to improve, Jindal said. "I expect there will be better insults coming back from Donald."
