Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., slammed Democrats over a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government and keep it from shutting down.

"I think some of my friends on the Democrat side think that the American people are stupid. They're not. They may not read Aristotle every day, but they understand what's going on. Democrats are prepared to shut down government because they want amnesty" for immigrants, Kennedy said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

While Democrats would have to add nine votes to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government, Kennedy said, "We may need more."

"There's some Republicans that are talking about voting against the CR. I hope it's just talk," Kennedy said.

"I don't mean any disrespect to my Democratic friends, but I don't know whether they're going to come to their senses or not," the senator said.

"The leftist Democratic base has white-hot hatred for Donald Trump. There's nothing he could do that they would approve of," Kennedy added.

He said that politics should not be the main consideration when discussing funds for the government.

"People up here just live and breathe it, and they forget about the American people . . . I think the American people do not want to see the government shut down," Kennedy said in the Fox News interview.

Kennedy also discussed the government budget in a Wednesday interview with Chuck Todd.

"We don't have a budget . . . that's an embarrassing fact," Kennedy said in the interview.
